Word Game Etiquette – How to Post Your Result Without Spoiling Other People's Puzzle
Daily puzzles brought a strange social issue – millions of people solve the same puzzle in different places and different time zones, and then they want to discuss it. That created quite an extensive list of rules, which people usually follow intuitively, while others just violate them without knowing the existence of such rules at all.
So, it is worth listing them, as the rules are not that obvious, while the offenses might get really annoying.
One rule that actually matters
Do not post the answer in any place where anyone who hasn't solved the puzzle yet may see it.
That's all. Any other rules are simply derivations of this one.
The whole idea of the color grid was designed exactly to allow sharing the result without posting the answer in plain letters. It is a great innovation, and it works perfectly. Once you post the result, you finish the game for everyone who hasn't solved the puzzle yet.
Types of offenses sorted by severity
The second one is probably the most widespread of all. Hints might seem useful, but they are not. If you mention the category, unusual letter or something of the sort, you have basically spoiled the whole puzzle. If you don't want to post the answer, then you shouldn't post the category either.
The timing
The grid is not a spoiler, so the timing is a mere matter of courtesy, but it still is important.
Posting the result at six in the morning shows up to people who haven't had their breakfast yet, let alone the game. It is not a spoiler, but it makes the game the competition with you before they even began.
It is reasonable to wait until mid-morning in your time zone for the general audience, and a bit more flexible in the group chat, where people solve puzzles around the same time.
Group chats and the arms race
The life cycle of the puzzle group chat is the following: it begins friendly, someone posts the two-guess result, someone else starts posting the screenshot of his statistics, and in a month the group becomes a competition nobody likes.
But there are some rules that prevent this from happening.
Post the grid, not the comment about how easy the puzzle is. Do not post your streak count unless someone asks you for that. Do not talk about your strategy unless someone asked you for that. And if someone failed the puzzle, the only acceptable comment is the acknowledgement of this fact, not the explanation of how you have managed to solve it in three guesses.
Help without spoiling
Sometimes your friend needs help, and asking for it changes the whole situation. The hint is not a spoiler if it was requested.
There is a scale, however. The confirmed letter positions which your friend considers the minimum information. The letter which was not guessed is somehow of a spoiler. Mentioning the category is pretty much like telling the answer.
Ask your friend what kind of help he/she needs before providing it. People generally need way less help than you think.
The version of the game that would prevent the problem
All these rules are needed because everybody plays the same puzzle. If you drop this requirement, the major part of the problem will be solved.
If you create the word and send it to a particular person, there will be nothing to spoil. He/She will have his/her puzzle, you will know what it is and the result will be sent back to you privately. Short version
Post the grid, never the answer. And never the category either. Wait until mid-morning. Do not explain your strategy spontaneously. Ask before helping. And do not forget that someone solving the puzzle worse because of what you have posted is the only actual failure, because anything else doesn't matter much.
